You get to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

Busy Motherhood Season

For now, my current reading and writing space is wherever I can find a quiet moment to myself. Sometimes that space exists right in the midst of my family life with baby on tow and I am gifted small pockets of time or where I have other watchful eyes with me to take care of my babies and I seize that opportunity to study, read or write.

In this current season of motherhood, especially with a seven-month-old, my time is shared. I cannot give it freely to whatever I want, whenever I want. Motherhood, paired with the desire to pursue a creative or intellectual hobby, requires intention and self-discipline which I am still in the process of building.

Reading and writing now take place in the early hours of the morning, before the world wakes, or just before sleep if sleep doesn’t claim me first 😆. Often, they happen in small snippets scattered throughout the day.

For busy mothers journeying through different stages of motherhood, this season teaches us to work with the time we are given rather than wait for the perfect moment or guilt ourselves for its absence. We learn to create, read, and reflect within the boundaries of our responsibilities whilst staying true to who we are and cultivating the time Allah has entrusted to us. When we seek Him sincerely, He multiplies our efforts and blesses our time, even as we remain fully engaged in the duties we have been called to fulfil.

Outside of this season:

My Ideal Reading and Writing Space would be…..

An airy yet cozy room that invites both focus and rest. It would have a desk and a reading nook, alongside a prayer space with my prayer mat, tasbeeh, favourite Qur’an, a beautiful prayer gown, and soft perfume. Plants would bring life to the room, and a dark bookcase would display my growing collection of books. A cosy rocking chair with a side table would rest on an ancient yet beautiful carpet.

The walls would hold deep meaning photographs of my father and grandfathers, my inspiration for becoming a reader, a writer, and a seeker of knowledge. There would be an image of the Awliya of Tarim, reminding me of the people I long to be with in both worlds, and a large picture of the Ka‘bah and Masjid an-Nabawi, the Qiblah of my heart 💚.

I would treat this space as sacred, because all knowledge returns to Allah, and ultimately, all of it comes from Him.

What is your ideal reading and writing space?

Until next time..

Peace be with you.
